These materials are applied to reinforced concrete to preserve its integrity and extend its service life by preventing or reducing damage from environmental exposure, carbonation, chlorides, moisture ingress, and other aggressive factors. For manufacturers and suppliers, compliance with EN 1504-2 is a prerequisite for <strong data-start=\"771\" data-end=\"785\">CE marking<\/strong>, enabling products to be legally marketed and used in the European Economic Area.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"869\" data-end=\"904\">Scope and Classes of Protection<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"906\" data-end=\"1005\">EN 1504-2 applies to products intended for surface protection of concrete in three main categories:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1006\" data-end=\"1120\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1006\" data-end=\"1036\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1008\" data-end=\"1036\"><strong data-start=\"1008\" data-end=\"1036\">Hydrophobic impregnation<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1037\" data-end=\"1074\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1039\" data-end=\"1074\"><strong data-start=\"1039\" data-end=\"1074\">Impregnation (sealing of pores)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1075\" data-end=\"1120\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1120\"><strong data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1120\">Coating (film-forming protective layer)<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1122\" data-end=\"1422\">Each product type must fulfill specific functions such as increasing resistivity, controlling humidity, providing resistance against physical and chemical attack, and improving appearance. Products must also demonstrate compatibility with the substrate and adequate adhesion under defined conditions.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1424\" data-end=\"1472\">Essential Tests and Performance Requirements<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1474\" data-end=\"1664\">In order to obtain CE marking under EN 1504-2, the following <strong data-start=\"1535\" data-end=\"1581\">performance characteristics must be tested<\/strong> by a Notified Laboratory and declared in the <strong data-start=\"1627\" data-end=\"1663\">Declaration of Performance (DoP)<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1666\" data-end=\"2301\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1666\" data-end=\"1717\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1668\" data-end=\"1717\"><strong data-start=\"1668\" data-end=\"1689\">Adhesion strength<\/strong> (pull-off test) \u2265 1.0 MPa<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1718\" data-end=\"1909\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1720\" data-end=\"1784\"><strong data-start=\"1720\" data-end=\"1752\">Permeability to water vapour<\/strong> (\u03bc coefficient), classified as:<\/p>\n<ul data-start=\"1787\" data-end=\"1909\">\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1787\" data-end=\"1826\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1789\" data-end=\"1826\">Class I: SD &lt; 5 m (high permeability)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1829\" data-end=\"1865\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1831\" data-end=\"1865\">Class II: 5 m \u2264 SD \u2264 50 m (medium)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1868\" data-end=\"1909\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1870\" data-end=\"1909\">Class III: SD &gt; 50 m (low permeability)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1910\" data-end=\"1954\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1912\" data-end=\"1954\"><strong data-start=\"1912\" data-end=\"1936\">Capillary absorption<\/strong>: &lt; 0.1 kg\/m\u00b2\u00b7h\u2070\u00b7\u2075<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1955\" data-end=\"1991\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1957\" data-end=\"1991\"><strong data-start=\"1957\" data-end=\"1980\">Permeability to CO\u2082<\/strong>: SD &gt; 50 m<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"1992\" data-end=\"2081\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1994\" data-end=\"2081\"><strong data-start=\"1994\" data-end=\"2030\">Resistance to freeze-thaw cycles<\/strong> (especially with de-icing salts): No visual damage<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2082\" data-end=\"2187\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2084\" data-end=\"2187\"><strong data-start=\"2084\" data-end=\"2110\">Crack bridging ability<\/strong>: Classified from A1 to A5 depending on performance at different temperatures<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2188\" data-end=\"2247\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2190\" data-end=\"2247\"><strong data-start=\"2190\" data-end=\"2213\">Chemical resistance<\/strong>: Based on intended exposure class<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<li class=\"\" data-start=\"2248\" data-end=\"2301\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2250\" data-end=\"2301\"><strong data-start=\"2250\" data-end=\"2277\">UV resistance and aging<\/strong> (for exterior coatings)<\/p>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2303\" data-end=\"2447\">Additional requirements may include fire behavior (Euroclass), abrasion resistance, and reaction to biological agents depending on the use case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2727\" data-end=\"2785\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Manufacturers must also prepare the <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\" data-start=\"2823\" data-end=\"2853\">Declaration of Performance<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> and affix the <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 16px;\" data-start=\"2868\" data-end=\"2882\">CE marking<\/strong><span style=\"font-size: 16px;\"> on packaging or technical documentation, providing transparency and legal compliance across the EU market.<\/span><\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2991\" data-end=\"2994\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2996\" data-end=\"3059\">CE Marking Support by the Institute of Coating Technologies<\/h3>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3061\" data-end=\"3646\">The <strong data-start=\"3065\" data-end=\"3102\">Institute of Coating Technologies<\/strong> offers specialized <strong data-start=\"3122\" data-end=\"3153\">CE marking support services<\/strong> in accordance with <strong data-start=\"3173\" data-end=\"3186\">EN 1504-2<\/strong>.
